CROWNS

The Crown section is divided by rank. Some countries may have more than one due to changes made by various Monarchs (especially Belgium), or simply another rendition. Generally speaking crowns with jewels are titled and crowns without jewels are ceremonial or permitted. But this is not always the case. Crowns with caps are usually reserved for Royalty, however exceptions have been recorded. The Ducal or Crest coronet is not the crown of a Duke, but rather simply a crown that is used often on top of the helmet instead of the torse or wreath, and also used as a charge on its own or as a crown for an animal or human head. Note as well, that some countries did not have, for example, a Marquis Crown (such as Germany, Sweden, Denmark etc.) Best to always rely on the blazon. If the blazon does not specify the type of crown, using a crest coronet should be your first choice, unless you have a reliable image that indicates otherwise.

Most of the crowns have rims. For placement on heads or as collars the back part of the rim shouldbe removed and some files have both versions. If you are finding it difficult to place a crown on a head (for example), drop us a note and we’ll remove the rim for you. We have included some of the more popular, without rims, in two separate folders, to help make this task easier.
