That which is contrary to the rules of heraldry. This refers primarily to amature attempts at heraldry by people that have not taken the time to familiarize themselves with the traditions of heraldry, which are often refered to as the ‘rules’. Those more familiar with the traditions of heraldry will have observed historical violations of every one of the supposed rules so in reality breaking the rules in only really a problem if one does not know the rule and have a good reason to break it.
